"WE ARE READY TO FIGHT"

Campaign Against Quebec City Plant Closure / Bulletin

2002-2005/020

Here is a sample of the postcard that's being sent to all locals.
Quebec City CUPW members are ready to fight for their jobs, and they need your help.

Over 300 Quebec Local members came out to a special meeting on Sunday August 14 to launch a campaign to stop the closure of the postal sorting plant on rue Saint Paul.

Our national president told the members that Canada Post's decision to close the plant is "nothing short of a declaration of war against our union and our members."

At that meeting, the workers said a resounding "no" to the closure of the Quebec City post office. And the Quebec City members said that they were ready to fight

Labour support

On August 15, CUPW was joined at a press conference by Henri Massé, president of the Quebec Federation of Labour (FTQ). He pledged the FTQ's support for the CUPW public campaign that includes:

· a petition to the House of Commons protesting the closure;

· asking Quebec MPs to lobby the Minister responsible for Canada Post, John McCallum, to cancel the planned closure; and

· inviting members of the Quebec National Assembly, local elected officials, Québec City's Chamber of Commerce and other groups with a stake in preserving a public universal postal service to support the union campaign and to demand that Canada Post keep these jobs in Quebec City.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and the Union of Postal and Communications Employees (UPCE) have also signed on to the campaign and launched the petition signing at their National Component convention in Quebec City last week.

Hands off Quebec!

The CUPW motto is "an injury to one is an injury to all". Members everywhere must respond quickly! We cannot let Canada Post get away with this closure.

We are circulating petitions to the House of Commons as well as post cards addressed to Moya Greene. The petitions are for both CUPW members and members of the public. We want tens of thousands of signatures. The postcards are for CUPW members - to let Moya Greene know what you think about the closure in Quebec.

Our message is clear: "hands off Quebec". We need to say this at meetings we have with management at every level. We need to say this to Moya Greene each time she meets with postal workers. She is travelling around the country meeting with postal workers and she should get the reception she deserves.

We know that the closure of Quebec is part of a larger plan to review the entire mechanized plant network. This closure eliminates jobs and would result in delays to Quebec City mail.

By stopping the closure in Quebec, we will protect all our jobs in all our communities as well as public postal service.

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES!

In solidarity,

George Floresco
3rd National Vice-President
