Campaign Against Quebec City Plant Closure / Blog
Yesterday, in Quebec City, more than 800 people took part in a demonstration to protest the closure of the city's sortation plant at 300, Saint-Paul Street. The demonstration was a clear show of solidarity. Many politicians were there, including Christiane Gagnon, Christian Simard and Roger Clavet from the Bloc Québécois. Claude Larose, Marc Bellemare and Michel Bouchard, all mayoral candidates, represented the municipal government. Bloc MP Christiane Gagnon reaffirmed her determination to make this issue a top priority in the House of Commons. In an emotional moment at the gathering, a petition with 125,000 signatures was presented to Bloc MP Christiane Gagnon, who will submit it to the House of Commons this week. The members of CUPW's Quebec Region were represented by Monique Allard, Regional Education and Organization Officer, as well as Christian Martel, Serge Hamel and Jacques Provencher. Denis Lemelin, 2nd National Vice-President, and George Floresco, 3rd National Vice-President, and Jean-Claude Girard, from the national office, also took part in the demonstration. Brother Denis Lemelin spoke to the demonstrators, and affirmed unequivocally that the National Executive Board firmly intends to fight to the end on this issue.
